The family adventure in Cambodia begins with a trip to Ratanakiri. Popularly known as the “Wild East”, this remote, enchanting and beautiful region of the country is located in northeastern Cambodia, the quintessence of the country’s emerging frontiers. A trip to Ratanakiri is packed with adventure galore.

The fun begins with the ride
While Ratanakiri itself is a splendid destination, the fun begins with the journey. Miles of dirt roads and half-built roads are waiting to be explored. The most convenient way to get to Ratanakiri is to travel from Phnom Penh. The 10-hour route takes you from Phnom Penh to Banlung via Kratie. From Siem Reap the journey is longer, up to 12 hours on a sunny day and a few extra hours when it rains. With a paradise of natural landscapes, crystal clear waters, crater lakes, lush mountains, rolling hills and bamboo jungles to explore, and river dolphins and other wildlife along the way, a trip to Ratanakiri is not to be missed.

Trekking
Get ready to trek through the hills and mountains of the region. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the labyrinthine hills or go on a jungle expedition to explore deep within the beautiful bamboo forests that Cambodia is famous for.

The relaxed 2-day treks through the Kalai jungle are perfect family adventure trips for all ages, where you will explore colorful forests and waterfalls. For the more adventurous among you, a 3-day trek takes you through the northeast jungle among local tribes for a journey deep into the region, where you will come into close contact with native hill tribes. A more strenuous 4-day trek takes you into the northeastern wilderness of Ratanakiri. Here, you will have the opportunity to ride on the back of an elephant to see the spectacular surroundings of the region.

kayaking
A great kayaking adventure is a trip down the Tonle San River past tribal villages and the dark jungles of Virachey National Park, exploring spectacular waterfalls and the remains of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Rantakiri province is home to several waterfalls, most of them near the capital Banlung.

Trekking
Short hikes (3 km or less) on the trails around Yak Loum Crater Lake are ideal for adventure and family fun, and the crystal-clear waters of the crater are perfect for a quick afternoon dip. A must-see destination, Yak Loum is a volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush jungle. For the more determined adventurers, a hike through the Kalai jungle hills takes you through the region’s farms and local tribes. To experience life among the tribes, the Ratanakiri natives are very friendly and will welcome you to stay with them – a perfect end to a family adventure holiday in Cambodia!
