This letter from Philemon was quite interesting and I learned a lot. This letter consists of 25 verses and I can hardly believe this is the 21st time that we are discussing it.

As usual, Pablo concludes with a greeting and hurts us: 25The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. [NIV] And my question is: Where? Where is the grace of God, because this world is full of confusion and chaos? Is God’s grace really present in the world today?

I received this letter from Moné:
I’m very sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you. This is not how life is supposed to work. Parents should not bury their children.

I want to share something personal with you today.

I grew up in a Christian home and my parents were wonderful examples to me. As the youngest of five siblings (the youngest and the oldest are girls and the middle three are boys), today I can tell you that I will never, ever change my childhood and our family for anything in this world.

But life isn’t fair and sometimes he slaps you so hard and crooked that you wonder if it was really necessary.

In 2003, my second oldest brother was brutally murdered in his home by burglars, and in 2006 my sister was murdered by her husband. It was a terrible time for us as a family and the circumstances and everything that surrounded this incident was simply unthinkable.

Then my dear dad died on September 25 at the age of 82 and now my mom is alone …

What I really want to tell you is that through all of this, my parents’ faith did not wane for a single day. On the contrary, it became stronger and stronger and that amazed me, because I was and sometimes I am still very bitter.

My mom’s words will always stay with me and leave me speechless and amazed: “My daughter, if it wasn’t your brother / sister, who would you have wanted it to be?”

I leave this to you this morning and I sincerely pray for comfort, because it is not an easy road.

Heartwarming, our parents. Those who teach us about faith and wisdom. Those who show us what to do with the world’s suffering, who show that our faith in God must be strengthened, even when the answers to many of our questions never come.

Through your faith, we can continue to endure, believe and know that 25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ (is) with your spirit …

Holy Scripture
Philemon 1: 23-25

Reflection
Where are you suffering
Do you struggle to hold on to God?
Do you think He is always good?

Pray

Lord help me to keep holding on and believing in your grace and goodness. Not just when things are going well, but especially in tough times. Thank you for never leaving us alone with the mess, but for having promised to be with us and eliminate the pain one day. In the name of Jesus, amen.
