Designing your physical therapy floor can be a fun project when you are starting out or remodeling your space.

Most gyms have hardwood or concrete floors that are unsafe and uncomfortable for those with physical limitations.

Here are some tips to help you design the best floor for physical therapy comfort for yourself or rehab clients.

Tip No. 1

The physical therapy floor must be thick to absorb the impact of falls. Recovering patients may occasionally fall and need a cushioned surface to prevent further injury.

One option is rubber floor tiles that come in 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch, and 3/4-inch thicknesses. Choosing a thicker density to place under workbenches and around other equipment can prevent serious injury from falls.

In bathrooms and areas where customers may have to change clothes, rubber floor tiles will provide cushioning if a customer accidentally falls.

Tip No. 2

Use rubber floor mats. Rubber commercial therapy gym floor mats have non-slip properties. This helps prevent sweat and spills from creating a slippery stain that can easily lead to a fall.

These mats are interlocking tiles that not only look great but also provide security. Extremely easy to install, the rubber mats are designed to be installed without adhesive and come in 5 standard colors: solid black, gray, blue, tan or red.

You can even make your own design as tiles are available in edge tiles, center tiles can be corner tiles.

Tip No. 3

Design your floor to flow well. Place rubber mats under and around all equipment while leaving the walking area covered with smooth surfaces such as wood or laminate flooring.

Have rubber tiles in the areas where the floor therapy will be done. This provides a smooth surface for clients to exercise. Create a smooth transition from hardwood to rubber flooring with tiles that gradually slope upward.

Tip # 4

Therapy often involves working with clients who are unstable or who may have vision problems. Design your floor with a unique color design to help them distinguish between areas.

Create a border around the training stations using a different color. You can even print custom logos on the rubber tiles. You can place these tiles in prominent areas.

The design of your physical therapy rubber floor should take into account the needs and comfort of those who will be using the area. Safety and comfort will give your clients a better sense of security during a recovery period.
