Building a successful Twitter profile doesn’t have to be a difficult task, and in previous articles I’ve outlined tips for optimizing your profile for search engines and attracting new followers. In this article, I want to cover other ways to make your profile successful and we will achieve this by “spreading the word” and creating backlinks to our Twitter profile.
One of the most popular techniques for building backlinks to a website in recent years was popularized by Angela E. Edwards. The strategy is to set up profiles on high PR forums in your niche and create a profile with a link containing your key phrase pointing to your website. To get an idea of the backlinks Angela has created, head over to Google and type in site:goarticles.com angelae8654. This will return the highest ranked article Angela has on Goarticles.
Now go to SiteExplorer on Yahoo and enter Angela’s URL in the search field, select “internal links” and you will get up to 1000 of Angela’s backlinks. Sadly, many of these sites have been spammed to death by people using this method, but you can also find your own. Here is a query that will reveal forums in your niche where you can hopefully drop some links:

Once you’ve found some forums with good page rankings, sign up and enter all the details about your website and don’t forget to link to your Twitter profile as well. Lastly, use pingomatic to ping the profile you have created, this will cause search engines to crawl your profile and create some backlinks for you.
Another great place to spread the word about your Twitter profile is Ping.FM. You can use this service to update all your social networks at once and it’s a great free tool. So head over to Ping.FM and you will see all the social networks listed there and also links to register an account with them. Many of these sites will allow you to post a link to your Twitter profile, resulting in great exposure for your profile page and blogs. Ping.FM is a great tool and an amazing method to update many social networks with one update, so make sure you do this step.
Yahoo Answers and Answers-based sites are also great places to link to your Twitter profile. Just write some helpful posts and put your Twitter link in the resource box.
Also look for blogs in your niche and post helpful comments and also link to your Twitter profile. Once your post is accepted, remember to ping the link with pingomatic.
These are just a few ways to drive traffic to your Twitter profile (and your blog) and will help you build a following of targeted and interested followers.
