Developers are working to get the necessary approvals for a large mixed-use project in downtown Grand Rapids. The project at the site of the former Sligh Furniture Building will transform the historic structure into apartment units, a food hall and a parking deck. Corewell Health is working to build a new office campus at Bond Avenue NW in Grand Rapids’ Monroe North neighborhood. The company is consolidating about 1,200 employees who are spread out across 13 different locations into the eight-story building. The definition of “West Michigan” varies widely, but it’s generally defined as the area bounded by the Grand Rapids-Kentwood-Muskegon CSA, the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek CSA or the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph CSA. In some contexts, the term can be applied to a wider geographic area that includes parts of eastern Indiana and southwest Illinois. The northern boundary is fuzzier; areas such as Greenville, in Montcalm County’s southwest corner, are often included because of their close economic ties to Grand Rapids, while towns in northern Muskegon and Kent Counties are sometimes considered part of the region. Likewise, some areas straddle regional boundaries, such as Vestaburg in central Greenville County and Edmore in the northeast corner of Montcalm. This can make comparing statistics difficult.
