Making easter hats and hats is about being creative and imaginative. The first step in making Easter hats and bonnets is to see what you already have at home to make your hat. You may already have the base for your hat, such as an old straw sun hat, a baseball cap, hair ties, etc. Check your drawings and sewing boxes for scraps of fabric, buttons, sequins, ribbons, wrappers, and tissue paper. Even old greeting cards are useful.

Once you’ve gathered as many useful items as you can, think about what kind of hat or cap you can make out of them. Your collection can grow by visiting your local store or craft store for items like candy eggs, chicks, feathers, and paper and cardboard. Cake decorating stores are often very helpful in making an Easter hat or bonnet.

Here are some very simple ideas for your Easter hat or cap that are easy to make.

A paper or plastic plate can be a great inexpensive base for your hat. Before you start decorating, make two holes on each side of the plate to attach ribbon, elastic, or string.

Cover your plate with tissue paper, paint or leave it plain. Paste a selection of Easter-related items on the plate, such as candy eggs, chicks, and bunnies. Or cover with crumpled brown paper, to look like a nest, and fill with chicks and eggs.

Using card (a cereal packet will do), cut out the petals to create a flower like a daffodil or sunflower. Color yellow and stay on your plate. Fill the center with cut egg cartons painted yellow or black. And finish with green ribbon so that the tie resembles the stem.

If you’re using an old straw hat, make or buy some flowers to glue onto the hat to create a spring garden. Fill with chicks and Easter eggs. Caramel eggs are better because they are less likely to melt and stick together better. It ends with a pretty bow in pastel tones.

Let your child make their own hat by shredding paper and taping it to the hat until it’s completely full. You can make a rainbow effect using different bands of colored tissue paper, or cover it entirely with paper flowers.

Children may be more reluctant to wear an Easter hat, so using an old baseball cap eliminates the issue of occasion when making children’s Easter hats. They can be decorated as animals or other themes very easily.

To make a nest out of a baseball cap, cover the cap with brown or tissue paper. Make an additional nest shape at the top out of crumpled paper and fill it with chicks and candy eggs like the hat on the plate.

To make an animal like a chick, cover it with yellow paper and make a beak out of orange cardboard to glue to the beak of the cap. Glue on some yellow feathers and make some eyes out of black material or cardstock.

Easter cone hat or bonnet

This can be done simply by your child.

Give your child a card and let them decorate it with whatever supplies you have, such as colored pencils, markers, ribbon, glitter, paper flowers, etc. Once they’re done, fold the card into a cone shape and secure the edges with tape. Make two holes in the end and thread a ribbon or elastic to tie under the chin.

This is particularly good for young children who may not like to wear a hat. It’s easy to make and uses very few materials.

Make large bunny ears and cover them with felt or gray material. Cover the inside with pink material. If you don’t have any material, just insert it with markers. Cut strips of pink or gray paper or fabric and wrap them around the hair band until completely covered. Fold the end of the bunny’s ear to make a flap and stick it firmly under the hair band.
