Whoever said that practice makes things possible and people successful was right: a lot of hard work, perseverance and passion drive people forward. This is a similar case when it comes to playing games and showing full participation in each of them: one must not only be familiar with the rules of the game, but also with the necessary skills and techniques that act as driving factors of the game.

Netball, being one of the newer games, requires a lot of practice and attention for players to really make a mark in whatever sport they are playing. Practicing the necessary netball drills turns out to be the only possible solution.

  • reaction exercise – Netball is the team invasion sport that requires high levels of fitness and this is not something you need to compromise on. Without having a good physical foundation, skills wouldn’t really matter, so make sure you’re never averse to practicing the exercises that improve your fitness. A simple tip to follow is to use the reaction exercises for a short period of time during each training session – the results will always be commendable (as long as you never do the possible jumps).

The reaction exercise can be used in groups of any size, so you never have to worry about divisions that need to be made in groups. To start, the players spread out on the track, at a distance of 2 or 3 meters from each other. The coach is required to stand in the center of the circle and from there signal the players to start the drill. Upon receiving the signal the players must
‘quick feet’ as they continuously move their bodies to face the ball. The coach will pass the ball to any of the members, and the ball continues around the group, while other players continue with their fast foot and follow the ball.

  • Cardio Shot – Among a number of netball training drills, one that should never be missed is the cardio shot. The drill focuses not only on fitness but also on improving shooting skills. Made between two players, one of whom acts as a shooter and the other as a collector. The one who is the retriever places the ball somewhere in the semicircle, while the shooter runs from there to the sideline and then back. When they both return to the ball, they attempt a shot (improving shooting skills as well). Once this is done, the shooter runs back to the sideline and back, while the retriever places the ball at the other spot in the circle. The drill can be continued until ten shots are fired or for a certain period of time.

  • Dodgeball Variation – The way to practice this drill is to divide the players into two teams and place one in each of the center and goal thirds. Give each team a number of balls, maybe half as many balls as players. The players then throw the balls to each other, while trying to catch the other team’s passes. It is different from dodgeball in that the two teams are trying to work together to pass the ball successfully. This exercise works well for teams that are already quite skilled and have a strong desire to work well together and a strong sense of self-motivation.

  • knitting drill – This drill relies on the basics of the game: get your feet moving quickly. To start, set up a line of cones about 1.5 meters apart. Athletes then take turns moving across the line of cones, using only the outside legs to propel themselves. Once they reach the end, they turn around and head back the same way. Time each player so they can try to beat each other’s times and improve their own. This drill would be especially useful when incorporated into some type of circuit training or fitness so players don’t have to wait too long between turns.

Players have the opportunity to choose from a number of exercises based on the area they are willing to cover and improve, in addition to the usual ones that improve people’s performance in the game and their fitness.
