Those who have heard this phrase or those who have engaged in this form of covenant will wonder what this guy is going to be talking about on this subject. But for those who are lost, I’ll start by telling us the meaning of covenant in the Oxford dictionary for advanced students: a covenant can be defined as a promise to someone or a legal agreement.
With this idea of what pact means, you can now grasp in your mind the meaning of a blood pact. The blood pact can be defined as a promise of blood between two people, in which both pierce their thumb to draw the blood they have by joining their bleeding thumbs or licking the blood from the other couple’s thumb, making a promise ( in most cases men and women who are lovers) to always be together and not get involved with any other individual and if any of the individuals involved goes off the rails, a particular curse is placed on himself as if the failing part is goes crazy, impotence, sterility and the rest.
The blood pact was widely practiced in the days of our ancestors by lovers to stay committed to each other, due to the fear that the lovers would be separated by the decisions of the parents by a richer couple, mainly for their daughters. Unfortunately, most people might think that this practice must be extinct, but I have to say that it may come as a surprise to some of our esteemed readers that some of our energetic young men and women still indulge in this barbaric practice.
Someone could say that the blood covenant is an expression of true love. But I will say that it is a myopic thought because if a man and a woman love each other truly and with all their hearts, then I ask them why they would result in a blood pact. Taking that step shows a lack of trust in each other because two parties who truly love themselves will not take an oath that will endanger the life of a derailed lover.
Another person might say, ‘Oh wow, what is this kid worried about?’ I tell you how it worries me a month ago, a cousin of mine in Aba met a girl at the Abia polytechnic with whom they talked for weeks and it got to the point where the girl has to visit the boy at home. He sent the girl a description of the house where he lives (the house was not really his; he was posing as my room that I shared in an apartment with a friend). When the girl arrived, she was a pretty girl about 5’5 tall with a low cut that fitted over her tank top and sexy low-waisted jean. ‘Wow’, I whispered when I was introduced to Chioma, that exclamation came out without my intention, it’s just to tell you how pretty she was.
After the presentation I found an excuse to let them be, I went to a bar a few blocks from my apartment to have a bottle of Guinness stout with another cousin of mine. After about an hour my mobile phone rang and my cousin (obinna) begged me to go upstairs, me and my other cousin (chibuzor) ran upstairs. I knocked on my door and Obinna opened the door, a porn movie was playing on my Samsung 21-inch flat screen TV. My boy was dressed in his camo Tommy Hilfiger boxers and the girl was in the bedding still intact and her hair was messy.
‘What’s the matter?’ It was the only thing my mouth could say. ‘Brothers, look at this girl, oh, after flirting with me for two weeks, she finally introduced herself, I tell him to come down, you know where he tells me?’ ‘I did not answer. She has told me that she makes a blood pact with her boyfriend as well as with Lagos and that if she tries something with me, tell her to leave. Boy, I know you believe this nonsense, I only call you because I say I leave your house, oh, because if Na my crib I will do and whatever happens, make it happen.
I told her to leave the girl alone and when they both got dressed, the girl came to thank me for intervening and said she wanted to get my mobile number. I gave him my mobile number and told him that I was really disappointed. A polite young girl like her will be involved in that, she was very open about her disappointment with herself and claims that she is frustrated. She claims that she wants to have a new relationship, but the blood oath she has always taken has haunted her and she claims to be tired of the boy she was in the pact with, and that the distance between them even makes things worse.
She left that day without taking advantage because I was there to dissuade my cousin from being less than chivalrous, if I had encouraged him maybe Chioma could have attracted punishment for his breach of the pact. Chioma might have been lucky, but it could be someone else who might not be as lucky as her. As Chioma said, she is tired of the relationship and wants to go out, but how does she do it? I think there are as many women as Chioma in this blood oath matter.
The negative effect of the blood oath is immeasurable. Young lovers should not risk their life because you want to show a boy or girl that you love him. Time changes things and the boy or girl you think is your life could in two years stop being your life, if not a normal boy and you may have met someone you really love and with whom you want to spend the rest of your life. realizing that what you felt for each other was only part of youthful lust.
People should also use their heads with their hearts while in a relationship and they should also remember that nothing lasts forever. You can enter into a relationship and commit to a blood oath with a boy or a girl and for a long time the boy or girl loses their lives prematurely and that puts the other party in a difficult position in their new relationship. Even when you get married, you cannot have children in your married life.
The blood pact is not recommended for young people and I personally see it as a barbaric way of showing love because ironically it shows hatred.
