There are new fads in the fashion world all the time and the latest to appear on the UK scene is the Toy Watch brand of watches and their particular product Toy Watch Fluo.

Essentially, they’re a pretty cheap version of a Rolex with a Swatch twist too. They have the fashion credentials of being Italian design and designers with a passion for flashy watches.

Toy Watch uses the impressive Miyota quartz movement (mechanical and wind in the kinetic energy of its movement) and has been described by Toy Watch dealers as “indispensable” and “pioneering”. They are built with a variety of materials such as the classic which is steel to the resistant and light Plastermic, as with the Toy Watch Fluo.

They have also been causing quite a stir on the celebrity scene with a number of high profile celebrities having been seen wearing them including Madonna, Al Gore (!) Lily Allen, Heidi Montag (to name a few) and most notably Oprah Winfrey who in her annual Favorite Things Christmas show highlighted Toy Watch models as hits with her. In fact, it wasn’t the popular Toy Watch Fluo that caught her eye, but rather the Crystal and Colored Crystal models.

Of the Toy Watch, he said, “I loved mine so much I wore it almost every day on my big road trip with Gayle.”

It’s no surprise that this commentary and promotion of Toy Watch has driven us “ordinary people” crazy, as we respect the opinions of mega-celebrities and don’t want to be seen as a sheep that doesn’t follow the herd. !

Perhaps I am viewing this cynically? They are good watches and I admit they look good too!

I think part of my problem is the influence of celebrities on the rest of the western world, which I never thought was proactive on their part. The other part of the problem is the statement they make about money and status, which is best summed up when looking at their rank, which is aptly called “Money Collection”.

Better than the Toy Watch Fluo, this collection associates the image of your new Money Collection with a universal symbol: the dollar. Obviously synonymous with u, power and the supposed ultimate goal in man’s pursuit of happiness, and it is this iconography that I have a problem with.

However, there is another side to Toy Watch and they cannot be blamed for the workings of our society. They have created a Limited Edition watch for charity; Keep A Child Alive (KCA), which has the words ‘Time To Love’ on the back and approximately 50% of the proceeds from each sale will go to KCA; can’t argue with that.
Yet despite all the hype, are they all that?

Well, probably not in the world peace scheme; but if you want a cheaper alternative to what would normally be a very expensive collection of gears and springs; are fashion conscious and would occasionally like to know what time it is, then the Toy Watch and especially the Toy Watch Fluo are probably the ones for you.
