Some who read this may not have a clue about Twitter, what it does, or what rabies is all about. I was there and tried it and now I’m hooked.

What is Twitter? Twitter is a tool for keeping people connected and letting them know what you are doing right now. Each message called “Tweet” has no more than 140 characters. A sister site is called Flutter and it only allows 25 characters for each message.

Is that how it works. Send a message, say, about your favorite soccer team (remember, all within 140 characters). If you are “following” at least one person, that message will appear on your profile page and on that person’s “timeline”. The more you tweet, the more others will see. Your friend may have 500 following you. If you send an interesting tweet, others will follow. You follow them in return and tweet more.

I have over 20,000 followers and 20,000 people that I follow. Twitter likes that you keep a one-to-one ratio. When I tweet, 20,000 people (at least) will see what I have said. But that number runs into the millions when you think of all the people that 20,000 people know.

Part of the “trick” of Twitter is playing around with the tool a bit. For the most part, you can’t break it, so take some time to get used to all the features.

So why do I have 20,000 followers? I’m not on Twitter to make money. Many go there to try to sell their products. In fact, I often tweet this: “This tweet will not make you richer, more beautiful, less gray, you will not have whiter teeth and it will not make you younger.” That single sentence I send encapsulates a good 50% of the tweets you see on Twitter.

I go there to interact with people. I’m also on Twitter to encourage people to travel through life. It is not an easy trip, but it is a good one.
